Studebaker Avanti 1963 to 1985 | Brakes and Clutch for a Legend

The Studebaker Avanti is more than just a car - it is a piece of American automotive history that outlived its manufacturer's demise. From 1963 to 1985, two entirely different eras of this sports coupé emerged, each requiring its own solutions when it comes to brakes and clutch.

Two Generations - Two Worlds of Technology

1963 - 1964: The Original Studebaker Avanti

Designed by Raymond Loewy, the Avanti was far ahead of its time: factory-fitted Dunlop front disc brakes - a first in American series production. The fiberglass-reinforced plastic body was not only rustproof but also lightweight. Power came from the company's own 4.7-litre V8 (289 cui) in various output levels - the supercharged R2 version delivered 268 hp, while the R3 even reached 335 hp. With record runs at Bonneville, the Avanti earned a reputation as one of the fastest production cars of its era.

1965 - 1985: The Avanti II Era

After the factory closed in 1963, two former Studebaker dealers purchased the rights to the Avanti and continued production from 1965 onward as the hand-built Avanti II. The body shape remained nearly unchanged, but under the bonnet, Chevrolet technology was increasingly adopted:

  • 1965 - 1981: Chevrolet 327, 350 and 400 cui V8 (the 327 Corvette engine with 300 hp is especially sought-after)

  • 1981 - 1985: Chevrolet 305 cui V8 with 155 - 190 hp (depending on emission regulations)

Brakes & Clutch - What You Need to Pay Attention To

Original Studebaker Avanti (1963 - 1964)

The braking system is a special case: the factory-fitted Dunlop front disc brakes are not compatible with modern systems. Wheel brake cylinders and other components are only available through specialised dealers - standard auto parts stores do not carry them.

Your sources for parts:

  • Specialised Studebaker catalogues

  • Brake lines and hoses as custom fabrications

Avanti II (1965 - 1985)

This is where it gets easier - the Chevrolet drivetrain means that many components are compatible with GM technology:

  • Brakes: From later models onward, factory-fitted front disc brakes

  • Clutch/Transmission: Chevrolet-compatible parts (e.g. Turbo-Hydramatic)

The Special Case: The 1985 Model Year

The year 1985 marks the end of Studebaker-based Avanti II production. Only 100 examples were built. They rolled on a Chevrolet Monte Carlo chassis with a 305-cui V8 and 700R4 automatic transmission. Externally recognisable by rectangular headlights and plastic bumpers instead of the original round headlights and chrome bumpers.
