Mazda R100

Between 1968 and 1973, Mazda presented a special version of the Familia (known in some markets as the Mazda 1000/1300) called the R100. At first glance, it was an unassuming 2+2-seater coupe, but hidden beneath the sheet metal was the heart of a sports car: the two-rotor Wankel engine (type 0820) from the Cosmo Sport. To make it suitable for everyday use, however, it was detuned with a simple carburetor to 100 PS. Apart from this rotary powerhouse, the car remained technically conventional – with a rear live axle and drum brakes at the rear, it followed tried-and-tested, conservative engineering paths.
